“economic degradation begets environmental degradation which begets social degradation”

April 23, 2009

“Majora Carter is dedicated to fighting “environmental racism” in her hometown of New York’s South Bronx. She’s working not just to hold back the polluters who target neighborhoods like hers, but to bring back the green.”

That’s how the conference website introduces this remarkable campaigner.  The video above is Majora’s speech from the conference in 2006. It may be 3 years old but it’s worth 20 minutes of anyone’s time, indeed some think she’s one of the best speakers in the world.

Majora worked for many years to turn the polluted and decaying riverside in the South Bronx into a green riverside park. Described by the New York Times as “one of the city’s best-known advocates for environmental justice” she now runs her own agency to advice other n how environmental imporvements can help neighbourhoods flourish.
